Our Team

The Aninga Project is comprised of four teams located on opposite sides of the world who work together to make dreams become reality for young women in East Africa.

Despite the distance between them, and as a result of modern technology, our teams are able to work together as one to help young women overcome the numerous barriers to education they face in East Africa.

Uganda

The Aninga Project’s Head Office in Uganda is located in bustling Kampala at the Centre for Youth Driven Development Initiatives (CFYDDI). The staff at CFYDDI provide all of the on-the-ground support required to ensure that our students have everything they need to focus on their studies. This includes regularly connecting with the young women we support as well as their teachers, principals and caregivers.

We are also very fortunate to have a vast network of passionate individuals and organizations across East Africa, especially in the Northern regions, who alert us when a bright young woman has had to drop out of school for lack of funding. This allows our team at CFYDDI to assess what The Aninga Project can do to help get her back into school.

Canada

The Aninga Project’s Head Office in Canada is located in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia. Our Canadian team is 100% volunteer-driven and works extremely hard to ensure that the funds are available to support, improve, and increase our efforts on the ground in East Africa.

We are so grateful to our amazing volunteers who introduce monthly and annual donors to us and put the FUN in FUNdraising at all manner of activities from bake sales to our annual team at the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon. Our supporters are spread across Canada, leading to new fundraising initiatives such as our participation in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The Aninga Project has been working with our incredible volunteer team in Bukavu, DRC since launching our program there in 2019. Our DRC Volunteer Team has been sending girls to school for much longer but was unable to fundraise in the country since it is an active conflict zone and there is a general lack of interest in educating girls.

We cannot overstate the dangers that girls and women face in DRC. It is often referenced as the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman. It is in an ongoing state of active conflict where rape and sexual violence are used routinely as weapons.

Our volunteer team is incredibly brave and creative in navigating the challenges that working in the DRC brings. As a result of their ingenuity, we have had girls in school there since 2019.

Kakuma Refugee Camps, Northern Kenya

The Aninga Project’s Head Office in Kenya is located in the Kakuma Refugee Camps with an established organization called ACARE.

Displacement because of conflict has unique impacts on women and girls. Women and girls living in refugee camps are at far greater risk of sexual assault. Unstable and unhygienic living conditions in camps have a significant impact on females. We know that women and girls in refugee camps are at high risk of being trafficked and their access to justice is limited.

ACARE works to mitigate these risks and dangers by creating a safe space at our school that has security, food, water, and feminine hygiene products as well as medical, counseling, and support services on site. ACARE ensures that our students work through a six-stage program that allows these young women to learn basic English and sewing. English provides them with the language they need to advocate for themselves, whether looking to build a life in the camps or exploring paths to start a life elsewhere. Sewing provides them with a skill they can use to generate income in the camp or outside.
